Mustangs Remain in First Place After Dominant 3-0 Conference Opener
9/27/2024 8:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The conference opener for Cal Poly's 2024 Big West season became a statement match as the Mustangs (8-4, 1-0 BWC) breezed to a 25-20, 25-19, 25-18 sweep over CSUN.
Chloe Leluge and Amy Hiatt seemed to develop chemistry extremely well despite not much match time together thus far through the season, stuffing the right side as CSUN's hitters struggled greatly against the pair of 6-foot-3 athletes.
Leluge, who led the match with 6 total blocks, and Hiatt combined for 11 total blocks as Cal Poly out-blocked the Matadors by eight. Leluge retained her spot as the Big West's hitting percentage leader (.387) after collecting 7 kills for a .462 clip through the match while committing just one error.
Lizzy Markovska earned a start for the first time since the season's opening tournament in San Luis Obispo and made her chances count as she led the match with the only double-digit kill total (11) to pair with 7 digs.
Although not as clinical from the kills angle as she usually is, Tommi Stockham was errorless against the Matadors and still tallied 8 kills, putting in work defensively as well with 7 digs to tie Markovska for the team lead.
On the serving end, London Haberfield matched her season total of three service aces by stringing together a single game career high reset with a trio of aces against CSUN.
Despite the final score, no team led by more than two halfway through the first set, as the foes tied nine times and exchanged six leads. However, the Mustangs were incredibly efficient in hitting the ball while also consistently blocking down one of the Big West's best offenses. Cal Poly closed out the first set 25-20.
The Mustangs were nearly perfect during the second set from a hitting perspective, tallying a single error and putting together their second best set this season (.524) as they faced little resistance in a 25-19 set victory.
Down early in the third set, 5-1, Cal Poly fired right back with 8 successive points to overturn the CSUN lead and take over the set, extending that to a huge run that eventually saw the Mustangs close out the sweep with their most dominant set, 25-18.
Cal Poly continues on the road tomorrow, heading north into the central valley for a match against Cal State Bakersfield after the Roadrunners swept perennial Big West contender UC Santa Barbara. That match will take place at 4:00 p.m. and can be found on ESPN+.
