Pair of Freshmen Lead the Way as Cal Poly Fights to 3-1 Win
9/20/2024 3:45:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
WICHITA, Kan. — Highlighted by a much improved offensive effort on day two of the Shocker Volleyball Classic, Cal Poly (6-4) hit .244 as a team and secured a definitive 3-1 win over Omaha.
A pair of budding stars in true freshmen Kendall Beshear and Chloe Leluge led the way from an attacking perspective. Beshear, quickly establishing herself as a fantastic and versatile back row athlete, tallied her third consecutive double-double (12 kills, 11 digs) and fifth double-digit kill match this season.
Leluge's efficiency as a middle blocker continues to be on show as she paces the conference in hitting percentage (.424) after her first match of double-digit kills (11) while also resetting her season-high of six blocks. She assisted Cal Poly in tying its second-best single game total block number (10) thus far in 2024.
Tommi Stockham collected a quartet of service aces for the third time this season, remaining the team and conference leader with 19 total. Stockham's long time setting partner Emme Bullis also showed up in a big way with 40 set assists, marking the fifth time this season she has tallied at least that many.
Similar to last evening, the Mustangs led on-paper and looked to be the better team from a purely aesthetic perspective, except they were able to hold off an attempted Omaha comeback this time.
During the first set, Cal Poly never trailed a single time and built off an early 7-2 run to take an inevitable 25-21 set win despite the Mavericks coming within a couple points on occasion.
The Mustangs experienced even less resistance in the second set as they went up 2-0 sets with a 25-18 win helped primarily by a five-point gush during the middle of the set that kept Omaha at an arm's length for the rest of that frame.
The Mavericks finally found some footing to begin a rally with a 25-22 overturn of Cal Poly's momentum, stringing together a decent run of pure kills to breathe some life into their game. Finally, Cal Poly put together their best hitting clip of the match at .300 with just a pair of errors to seal a 25-19 set win for the match victory as a whole.
Cal Poly finally wraps up its last non-conference tournament of the year tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. (PT) against a tough Northern Colorado squad.
