Mustangs Survive to Pull Off Reverse Sweep Over Northern Colorado
9/21/2024 1:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
WICHITA, Kan. — Emulating the "Cardiac Stangs" name given to Cal Poly (7-4) from numerous reverse sweeps in 2023, the Mustangs pulled off their first one 2024 in a thrilling 3-2 win (19-25, 27-29, 25-22, 25-22, 15-10) over a strong Northern Colorado team that came into the match with a 9-3 record.
Tommi Stockham looked back to full strength after losing her double digit kills streak yesterday, reviving that trend with a game-leading 19 kills during her fifth double-double of the season alongside 16 digs.
Veteran and redshirt senior Amy Hiatt enjoyed a full slate of work for this first time this season, coming third on the team for kills (8) in this game. Just ahead of her was middle blocker Breklyn Pulling who continues making an instant impact as a redshirt sophomore transfer from Big West foe Cal State Bakersfield. Pulling tallied nine kills while also collecting four total blocks.
True freshman libero Elif Hurriyet continues to thrive in the spotlight, leading the team with four service aces and 25 digs against the Bears. Defensive specialist London Haberfield also had 13 digs in what was a solid overall defensive match for Cal Poly, holding Northern Colorado to just a .170 hitting clip.
Although no surprise by now, Emme Bullis passed the half-century mark for the third time in four games after putting up 52 set assists against Northern Colorado.
The first pair of sets were disastrous for the Mustangs from an offensive side of the match as errors plagued their hitting numbers (.034 in set one, .143 in set two). They handedly lost the first set 19-25, and despite going down to the wire during a 27-29 second set, the Mustangs totaled 13 attacking errors in those first two frames.
Although this was one of the toughest starts to a match this season, Cal Poly buckled down and had nearly identical third and fourth sets with a .297 team hitting percentage in the third and .344 in the fourth while tallying 14 kills in each of the two frames. In each of those sets, Northern Colorado held solid leads at times but Cal Poly was determined to upset what might have become a quite lopsided affair. Both sets were won 25-22 in the end to force a tiebreaker.
After overturning an early three-point Bears lead in the fifth set, Cal Poly never trailed again and eased to a 15-10 win and match victory. Aside from Stockham's typically fantastic offensive effort, the Mustangs totaled 10 blocks as a team and never let Northern Colorado surpass a .200 team hitting percentage.
With the regular season non-conference slate in the books, Cal Poly continues on the road for one more weekend but for the start of conference play. First up is CSUN on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m. before heading to the central valley for a match on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 4:00 p.m. against Cal State Bakersfield. All Big West matches - with exception to Cal Poly football conflicts - are available on ESPN+.
