Mustangs Fall 3-2 to Shockers Comeback in Tournament Opener
9/19/2024 10:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
WICHITA, Kan. — Despite taking a definitive 2-1 lead through three sets with back-to-back multi point wins, Cal Poly (5-4) fell to a Wichita State comeback (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 9-15) during a hard-fought tiebreaker.
With this match, Emme Bullis set a new single-game season high of 57 assists in helping threedifferent Mustangs tally double-digit kill numbers: Stockham (16), Beshear (17), and Pulling (13).
Tommi Stockham once again extended her double-digit kills streak, but just as impressive was Cal Poly's defensive numbers in holding the Shockers to .172 hitting while five different Mustangs gathered double-digit digs. Kendall Beshear's double-double (17 kills, 18 digs) provided another example of her back row versatility.
The first set truly set the tone for what would become a nail biter of a match as Cal Poly initially jumped out to an 8-3 lead before the first Shocker timeout. Wichita State eventually came to overturn the score with some momentum coming out of that timeout to lead 17-14. The Shockers continued pulling ahead and took advantage of Cal Poly's errors to take set one 25-22.
Cal Poly led most of the way during the second set with keeping errors down being the difference maker, as Elif Hurriyet and Kendall Beshear made fantastic plays in the back row to help the Mustangs to a solid 25-20 set win.
Cal Poly led .184 (36 kills) to Wichita State's .101 (15 kills) hitting percentage through the first two sets. Beshear, who would end up notching her second consecutive double-double later in the match, was already sitting at 10 kills and 8 digs through two.
To start the third set, an early 5-point run helped put Cal Poly ahead as Breklyn Pulling continued to put up astounding hitting numbers per error.
Despite that early Cal Poly lead, Wichita State managed to fight back and make it 19-all before the Mustangs put the third set away 25-19 with six straight points.
Both sides continued keeping each other's attacks down with consistent blocks and long rallies that forced constant over passes. Wichita State had an eye-popping 23 total blocks through the entire match, which helped the Shockers secure a 25-21 set win to take the match to a fifth set tiebreaker
Wichita State led the tiebreaker set from the start and held a large 9-4 lead before Cal Poly took a strategic timeout. The Shockers still kept up the momentum and breezed through the rest of the set for a 15-9 win and match victory.
Now holding a 5-4 record, Cal Poly heads into game two of the Shocker Volleyball Classic with a match against Omaha on Friday at noon.
