SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore quarterback Bo Kelly threw for a season high 264 yards and three touchdowns and the Mustang defense continued to bring it as Cal Poly football won its home opener over Western Oregon Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field 31-14.
Kelly was 20-33 with two completions of over 50 yards as he connected with three different receivers on touchdowns. Tight end Michael Otterstedt and Jake Woods as well as receiver Michael Briscoe each had touchdown receptions. Senior Giancarlo Woods led Cal Poly receivers in yards with 67.
Redshirt freshman running back Aiden Ramos led the rushing attack with 23 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Mustangs (1-2) were led by linebacker Kenny Olson's nine tackles. Cornerback Kai Rapolla came up with an interception to go along with three tackles. Senior defensive end Elijah Ponder had another strong game despite only playing in the second half. He still had a sack and blocked a field goal.
After forcing Western Oregon into a three-and-out on the opening drive of the game, Cal Poly went down the field from their own 36 in five plays, which included a 55-yard pass from Bo Kelly to Giancarlo Woods. A few plays later, running back Aiden Ramos ran it in from one yard out for the touchdown.
With nine minutes left in the second quarter, Cal Poly pulled off the flea flicker with Bo Kelly connecting with tight end Michael Otterstedt for a 34-yard touchdown to put the Mustangs ahead 14-0. The Wolves got on the board after a nearly seven-minute drive over 11 plays resulted in a five-yard rushing touchdown with just over two minutes left in the first half.
On Western Oregon's opening drive of the second half, the Wolves' Dominique Loggins broke loose on a 44-yard run for a touchdown. They then converted a two-point conversion to tie it 14-14 with 11 minutes left in the third.
