SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis program recently announced the final addition to its 2024-25 roster with freshman Anushree Shekhera joining the team for the upcoming season.

Shekhera graduated from Westmont High in Campbell, Calif. this spring after a stellar prep and junior tennis career, and the Mustangs are excited about the potential impact she could have on the court for the defending Big West champions.
“We are thrilled to have Anushree join our program this year,” head coach Ellie Edles Williams said. “Anushree is a great example of striving for excellence both in the classroom and on the court. Her success both in the classroom and in NorCal junior tennis, especially in doubles will be a great addition to our program.”
The Campbell, Calif. native was a star at Westmont High, leading the Warriors’ girls tennis team to a league title as a freshman during the COVID-delayed spring 2021 season. It was Westmont’s first league championship since 2013 and Shekhera was crowned team MVP.
A President’s Education Award recipient, Shekhera has shined in USTA tournaments across California for a number of years, both at the junior and adult level. During her high school career, she was ranked as a four-star prospect by TennisRecruiting.net.
Shekhera chose Cal Poly because the school was the perfect fit to help her meet her goal of excelling at a high level in the classroom and on the court. She plans on majoring in business administration with a concentration in information systems.
Shekhera’s older brother, Ajai Shekhera, played on the UC Santa Barbara men’s tennis team from 2017-18. She said she’s always looked up to Ajai as a role model and credits him for having the biggest impact on her athletic career.
“He supported me and helped me become the player I am today,” Shekhera said. “I've learned a lot from his experience of playing both soccer and tennis at a very high level, which also sparked my interest in following in his footsteps.”
Shekhera joins Jessica MacCallum as the Mustangs’ two incoming freshmen this year. The rest of the 10-member team is filled with eight returners — seniors Eliza Bates, Peyton Dunkle and Romane Mosse, juniors Kennedy Buntrock, Sarah MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets, redshirt sophomore Amy Leather, and sophomore Natalie Lynch.
Cal Poly opens its 2024-25 fall season on Oct. 3-6 at the Long Beach Invite.
