SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s soccer program concludes preseason prep Saturday when the Mustangs host Trinity Western University (Langley, British Columbia) for an exhibition match.
First kick is set for 6 p.m. at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium. Admission to the match is free and currently three 45-minute periods are expected to be played.
Trinity Western plays in the Canada West Universities Athletics Association and this past season took down University of British Columbia 6-5 in penalties to claim the program’s 10th Canada West title. The visit to San Luis Obispo is part of a three-match California road trip to open the season for the Spartans. Trinity Western kicked off its California swing on Thursday at Cal State Bakersfield, falling 5-1 to the Roadrunners, and will head to UC Santa Barbara on Monday after facing the Mustangs.
Saturday’s exhibition will mark the first all-time meeting between Cal Poly and Trinity Western.
The match with the Spartans is the Mustangs’ final tune-up before opening their 2024 season at home on Thursday, Aug. 15, against Portland. Tickets to the match at Spanos Stadium are available HERE.
This fall, the Mustangs are looking to build off an historic season in 2023 that saw the team advance to the program’s ninth Big West Championship match, tied for the most all-time in conference history. Cal Poly brings back plenty of experience with 30 returners from that squad, the most returners by any team in Division I women’s soccer. Among those 30 are 26 returning letterwinners and 10 returning starters. Cal Poly also brings back 90 percent of its goal production from last year’s team that set a program record for players to record a point in a season (21), matched a 27-year-old program record for goal scorers in a season (15) and for the first time in program history finished with six or more wins in Big West play (6-3-1) for the third straight season.
Last year, Cal Poly saw seven players earn All-Big West honors, the program’s most in a season since 2014, and all of them are back this fall, including senior defender and reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year Emma Brown. On Tuesday, Brown was named to the United Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Watch List for defenders ahead of the upcoming season.
