SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s soccer team and Trinity Western University (Langley, British Columbia) played to a scoreless draw in an exhibition match Saturday night at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
It was the Mustangs’ final tuneup before opening their 2024 season on Thursday at home against Portland.
Three periods were played during Saturday’s exhibition — two 45 minutes periods followed by one 40-minute period.
Cal Poly was on the front foot early in the match against the Spartans — who play in the Canada West Universities Athletics Association — as sophomore forward Annika Smith generated two dangerous shots on goal in the box within the first seven minutes of action.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Riley Wilkerson, a San Luis Obispo native, started in net for the Mustangs and made a terrific diving save with her right hand in the 36th minute to keep the match at 0-0. She finished with three saves across 45 minutes in net.
Senior forward Emily Nedom blasted a shot just wide of the net in the closing minutes of the first period as Cal Poly outshot Trinity Western 9-4 in the first 45 minutes.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel, a three-time All-Big West selection and the 2022 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, started in net for the Mustangs in the second period, securing five saves across 45 minutes. Senior Maille Smith and sophomores Anna Babinski and Jaycee DeFazio all had quality looks at net in the period, but were unable to cash in.
In the third and final period, freshmen goalkeepers Shannon Porubski and Cara Anderson split time in net. Anderson made three saves and Porubski grabbed one. The Mustangs had a few opportunities to break the scoreless draw down the stretch, but were unable to breakthrough.
Cal Poly hosts Portland in its 2024 season opener at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
