Stockham Tallies Double-Double, Cal Poly Opens Season with 3-1 Win
8/30/2024 9:45:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three Mustangs tallied double digit kills and another trio pulled off the same feat with digs as Cal Poly overcame four tight sets to defeat Sacramento State 3-1 in the 2024 season's open. In a back-and-forth battle between two squads that will inevitably be vying for their respective conference titles, no set was won by more than three points.
Ever the versatile pin hitter, Tommi Stockham became the first Mustang of 2024 to tally a double-double as the redshirt senior picked up 21 kills and 12 digs. While leading the team with kills, trailed by Lizzy Markovska (12) and Tess Masingale (10), only true freshman libero Elif Hurriyet topped her from the defensive side of the ball (17 digs).
Tess Masingale was a wall up front, resetting her single-game career high of 6 total blocks while leading both teams. From a setting perspective, Emme Bullis had no equal as she paced all other players on both teams with a total of 45 assists.
While set one was a tic-tac affair of constant lead changes in which Cal Poly found footing at the end to run away with a 25-22 win, the second set was one of runs where the Hornets and Mustangs would trade multi-point gushes before settling into a tiebreaker battle as they eclipsed the 25-point threshold. Sacramento State finally found solid production from the attacking end during set three, going toe-to-toe with the Mustangs and eventually taking a 27-25 set win.
In the fourth and final frame, Sacramento State played off the third set momentum and opened up putting Cal Poly in a 9-4 hole. After a strategically called timeout by coach Carolina Walters, the Mustangs recovered and went on an 8-1 run through the middle of the set. Although the Hornets would eventually fight back to a late lead into the 20's, Cal Poly turned the result around, ending on the Turkish libero's service ace to tie a bow on the successful evening.
After a hard-fought 3-1 victory Friday night, the Mustangs now have a pair of games book-ending day two of the invitational beginning with Saint Mary's at 10:00 a.m. and closing with #19 Arkansas as Cal Poly looks to open the season with a home tournament championship under its belt.
