SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A goal and two assists courtesy of freshman Kiki Vostermans propelled Green to a 3-1 victory over White in the annual intrasquad scrimmage for the Cal Poly women’s soccer program on Saturday night at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs’ roster was split in half to create the Green and White teams for the scrimmage and two 45-minute halves were played.
Vostermans struck first in the 15th minute for the Green team as senior Aynsley Conner fed the midfielder a pass in front of the goal and the San Jose native did the rest. Green carried that 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The Green team doubled its lead in the 70th minute as sophomore Jaycee DeFazio chipped a goal into the back of the net off a pass from Vostermans. Junior Jessie Halladay, Cal Poly’s leading goal scorer last season, struck in the 88th minute, sending a rocket to the far left post to give Green a 3-0 advantage. With 35 seconds left in the scrimmage, White finally broke through as senior Emily Nedom headed the ball into the back of the net off a perfect cross from freshman Avery Chaney.
Senior Mackenzie Samuel made three saves for Green and freshman Cara Anderson turned away four shots for the White team.
Cal Poly concludes its preseason prep at 6 p.m. next Saturday, Aug. 10, when the team hosts an exhibition match against Trinity Western University of Langley, British Columbia. The Mustangs officially open their 2024 season on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. at Spanos Stadium when the team hosts Portland.
