SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Distance sensation Davis Bove received another prestigious honor Wednesday, this time for his dedication and hard work in the classroom.
Bove earned College Sports Communicators Third Team Academic All-America honors, marking the third straight year an athlete from the Cal Poly track and field program has garnered CSC Academic All-American praise.
The Franklin, Tenn. native was one of just 46 athletes in Division I to be named to the CSC Academic All-America men's track & field/cross country team, and one of 14 selected to the Third Team.
Bove, who is currently pursuing his master's in business analytics at Cal Poly, is the 14th athlete in Cal Poly history to receive CSC Academic All-America honors and the sixth track & field/cross country athlete, joining John Bennett, Emily Hallett, Alex Merder, Robin Root and Jill Ellingsen.
Bove recently was just .01 seconds away from advancing to the semifinals in the men's 1,500-meter at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene on June 21. The race officially ended Bove's stellar collegiate track and field career. The graduate student who transferred to Cal Poly last summer after earning his bachelor's in bio-engineering from LSU has one season of eligibility left in cross country.
Bove started his Cal Poly career last fall by qualifying for the NCAA Cross Country Championships by placing eighth at the NCAA West Regional, tied for the second-highest individual finish by a Mustang man at the meet in program history. He also ran away with the individual title at the conference meet to be crowned Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year and led the Mustangs to their second straight Big West Championship.
On the track this year, the Cal Poly Male Athlete of the Year shredded the school record books. Indoors, Bove became the fifth Mustang ever to run a sub-four-minute mile with the second-fastest time in school history (3:58.0) and he established a program record in the men's 1,000 (2:20.97). Outdoors, he qualified for the NCAA West Prelims in both the 1,500 and 5,000, and scored a total of 18 team points for the Mustangs at the Big West Championships, winning the conference title in the men's 1,500 and securing second in the men's 5,000. He also ran the third-fastest 5,000 time in program history (13:48.0).
After placing 15th overall in the 1,500 quarterfinals at the NCAA West Prelims on May 24 and finishing just .67 seconds away from advancing to the NCAA Finals based on time, Bove shattered the school record in the 1,500 at the Music City Track Carnival on June 1 with a time of 3:38.40. Then just a week later, Bove bested that time with a personal best of 3:37.13 at the 2024 Portland Track Festival on June 9 to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
