SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program continues to receive recognition for its banner season, earning rankings in the final ITA Southwest Region and national Mid-Major team rankings released Friday.
The Mustangs checked in at No. 10 in the extremely difficult Southwest Region. Eight of the nine teams that finished in front of Cal Poly in the rankings made it to the NCAA Tournament and all nine ended the season nationally ranked.
In the final Mid-Major rankings, Cal Poly was 21st, the program's highest ranking ever since the ITA started the poll in 2022.
Just over two weeks ago, the Mustangs received a final team national ranking of 68th from the ITA. The national ranking was the highest for the program since Cal Poly checked in at No. 65 in the April 20, 2022 poll. It's also the highest end-of-season ranking for the Mustangs since finishing the 2021 season ranked No. 62 in the nation.
Cal Poly made a remarkable run in the conference tournament this season as the No. 5 seed to capture its second Big West Championship in program history and first since 2003. The triumph allowed the Mustangs to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships for the third time in school history. Cal Poly became the first No. 5 seed to win the Big West Championship and only the second No. 5 seed or higher to capture the conference title, joining No. 7 seed Pacific in 2000.
In its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2011, the Mustangs fought valiantly but fell to No. 11 seed USC 4-0 in the First Round. Cal Poly finished the year with a 13-9-1 record, marking the second time in program history the team has recorded 13 or more victories in four consecutive seasons (2021-24) — the other time being 1988-91 when the program was in Division II.
Graduate student Melissa LaMette, fifth year Delanie Dunkle and juniors Peyton Dunkle and Romane Mosse all earned All-Big West honors, and head coach Ellie Edles Williams was named Big West Coach of the Year.
