SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly phenom Drew Huston will descend upon Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis this weekend to open the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials along with more than a thousand other American swimmers that earned the right to compete for spots on Team USA.
Huston, who wrapped a stellar sophomore season for the Cal Poly swimming team this spring, is slated to hit the pool in two events at Olympic Trials — the men's 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter backstroke. The Trials start this Saturday and run through Sunday, June 23, and Huston will take the water for the first time this Sunday morning for the preliminaries of the men's 100 back.
All sessions of the U.S. Olympic Trials will be streamed live on Peacock, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports App. NBC will air a live broadcast of the evening sessions, which include all of the event finals, each night throughout the nine-day meet, starting at 5 p.m. PDT. Delayed replays of preliminary sessions will be aired on USA Network each day.
Preliminaries each day start at 8 a.m. PDT inside the home of the Indianapolis Colts, marking the first time a swim meet will be held in an NFL stadium.
Entering the Trials, Huston is seeded 52nd out of 79 swimmers in the men's 100 back with a time of 55.48 seconds. Huston will need to be in the top-16 in prelims to advance to the 100 back semifinals Sunday night. From there, the top 8 swimmers in the semis will secure spots in the final Monday night.
Huston will have to wait until 8 a.m. PDT Wednesday to swim in the men's 200 back prelims. He is seeded 38th out of 72 swimmers with a time of 2:00.79. The final for the 200 back will be contested on Thursday night.
A maximum of 26 men and 26 women will earn a spot on the 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team.
Huston punched his ticket to the U.S. Olympic Trials in his first event last August at the 2023 Speedo Junior National Championships in Irvine with a lifetime best in the 100 back. He then earned an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 200 back on March 10 during a Pac-12 Last Chance Invite.
Huston has been nothing sort of sensational since becoming a Mustang two years ago. This season, the Fox Island, Wash. native shattered school records in the 100- and 200-yard back, became Cal Poly's first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion in the men's 200 back and swam the lead-off leg on Cal Poly's school record breaking 400 medley relay at the conference championships. He also swam the fourth-fastest 200 IM time in program history and the fifth-fastest 100 free.
Huston is looking to become the second athlete with ties to the Cal Poly swimming and diving program to earn a spot on Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics. 2014 Cal Poly grad and triathlete Taylor Spivey, a member of the Mustang swimming and diving team from 2009-14, learned last week she had been selected to her first Olympics. She was selected to represent the U.S. in Paris by the USA Triathlon selection committee based on her performance during the Olympic qualification period over the last two years.
