SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Following a historic performance at the Oxy Invitational on Saturday, graduate student Davis Bove has claimed the final Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week Award of the season.
This is the first time Bove has earned Big West weekly honors on the track. During cross country this past fall, the Franklin, Tenn. native was named Big West Men's Athlete of the Week twice.
This marks the third straight week a Mustang has won the Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week Award, after MacGregor TeSelle secured the praise on April 23 and Carson Smith garnered the recognition on April 30.
At Occidental College on Saturday, Bove led a pack of four Mustangs that posted top-10 marks in school history in the men's 1,500-meter. Bove ran the second-fastest time in program history (3:40.19) to place seventh overall at the meet. The time is currently the 10th best recorded in the West Region this season and No. 24 in Division I. Bove was just .63 seconds off Aidan McCarthy's 2023 school record in the event.
Bove also posted the third-fastest men's 5,000 time (13:48.0) in school history earlier this outdoor season. Bove is one of just five Mustangs ever to run a sub-four minute mile (3:58.0) and is the current school record holder in the indoor 1,000 (2:20.97). This fall, Bove captured the Big West individual cross country title and qualified for the NCAA Championships by placing eighth at the NCAA West Regional — tied for the second-highest individual finish by a Mustang man at the West Regional in program history and the best since Sean Ricketts took eighth in 2003.
Cal Poly hosts the full Big West Track & Field Championship meet this Friday and Saturday at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex. Events start at 10 a.m. each day. Bove is entered in both the 1,500 and 5,000 at the meet.
