4 Mustangs Compete in Speedo Grand Challenge

IRVINE, Calif. — U.S. Olympic Trials bound Drew Huston posted a long course lifetime best in the men's 100-meter backstroke to secure a third-place finish and highlight performances for the four current Cal Poly men's swimmers that competed in the 2024 Speedo Grand Challenge on Saturday and Sunday at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine.
Sophomores Drew Huston, Lucas Meneghetti, Anthony Moskalenko and Alex Seybold all participated in the meet, which featured some of the top swimmers in the world.
Huston, the 2024 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion in the 200-yard back, had a stellar showing in the 100-meter back Sunday, swimming a personal best of 55.35 seconds in the final to capture third, only finishing behind Hubert Kos from Hungary (53.81) and Leon Marchand from France (54.55). Kos and Marchand helped Arizona State capture its first-ever NCAA team title at the end of March and Marchand was named the CSCAA Men's Swimmer of the Year for the third consecutive season. Both Kos and Marchand have won multiple Pac-12 titles and hold countless school and international records, and Huston went toe-to-toe with them as he gears up to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on June 15-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The Fox Island, Wash. native also qualified for the B-Final in the men's 200 back at the 2024 Speedo Grand Challenge, finishing sixth overall with a time of 2:02.99. Last year at the Speedo Grand Challenge, Huston qualified for Junior Nationals in the 200 back. At that meet held in Irvine, Huston would punch his ticket to the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 back with a time of 55.48 seconds. Huston qualified for the Olympic Trials in another event on March 10 at a Pac-12 Last Chance Invite, swimming a lifetime best in the 200 back (2:00.79).
With the Olympic Trials less than three weeks away, Huston is set to race in the prelims of the men's 100 back on Sunday, June 16, and the prelims of the men's 200 back on Wednesday, June 19, in Indianapolis.
Meneghetti, Moskalenko and Seybold also had strong swims at the Speedo Grand Challenge. Meneghetti made it to the B-Final in both the men's 100 and 200 back, finishing 12th overall in both. Seybold took 16th in the 400 individual medley and 19th in the 200 breast, and Moskalenko secured 20th in both the 100 and 200 butterfly while swimming lifetime bests in both. Seybold is the current school record holder in the men's 200 breast and captured second in the 100 breast at this year's MPSF Championships.
