
Cal Poly Wraps Up Season in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Cal Poly track and field program wrapped up its 2024 season Saturday at John McDonnell Field as junior Melody Nwagwu and sophomore Tatiana Cornejo competed on the final day of the NCAA West Prelims.
Nwagwu and Cornejo, who both won two individual titles at the Big West Championships, capped off incredible seasons Saturday.
In her first West Prelims, Cornejo finished 28th overall in the women's 5,000-meter semifinals (16:36.56). The first Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Year award winner in program history swept the conference titles in the 800 and 1,500 this year, becoming the first Mustang in school history to do so. Cornejo broke the school record in the indoor 5,000 this season and is currently No. 4 all-time in the outdoor 5,000 and No. 10 in the 1,500.
Nwagwu finished off her first West Prelims appearance by placing 41st in the women's triple jump. Nwagwu, the fourth Mustang in program history to be named the Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Year, swept the Big West titles in the women's long jump and triple jump becoming the first Big West athlete since 1991 to accomplish the feat and the third overall. The Aurora, Colo. native is currently No. 2 all-time in school history in the long jump (20-3.75) and No. 4 in the triple jump (42-0).
