FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Graduate student Davis Bove just missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships as the Cal Poly men's track and field program wrapped up its showing at the NCAA West Prelims on Friday at University of Arkansas' John McDonnell Field.
In the quarterfinals of the men's 1,500-meter, Bove placed 15th overall and eighth in heat 1 with a time of 3:41.76, finishing just .67 seconds away from advancing to the NCAA Championships based on time. It's the second straight season Bove has placed 15th overall at regionals after finishing three places short of securing a berth to nationals at the NCAA East Prelims last year while competing for LSU.
The Big West men's 1,500 champion ran the second-fastest time in school history in the event earlier this season (3:40.19) and posted the third-fastest 5,000 time (13:48.0) in his lone track season at Cal Poly. The Franklin, Tenn. native scored a total of 18 team points for the Mustangs at the Big West Championships and during this indoor season became one of just five Mustangs ever to run a sub-four-minute mile time (3:58.0) and established a school record in the 1,000 (2:20.97).
Sophomore Carson Smith also raced in the 1,500 quarterfinals, finishing 20th overall (3:46.24) at his first West Prelims. The Big West 1,500 runner-up posted a lifetime best in the event (3:41.41) during the First Round on Wednesday, improving upon his fourth best time in school history. Earlier this season, the Temecula, Calif. native also ran the sixth-fastest men's 800 time in school history (1:49.51) and posted a sub-four-minute mile indoors (3:59.41).
Sophomore Rory Devaney capped another incredible season by securing 25th in the men's discus (178 feet, 11 inches) to finish off his second consecutive appearance at the West Prelims. He placed 33rd in the hammer throw on Wednesday. The All-Big West honoree in the hammer and discus broke a 25-year-old school record in the discus earlier this season (189-1) and is currently No. 2 all-time in the hammer (221-10).
Cal Poly wraps up the NCAA West Prelims on Saturday when junior Melody Nwagwu competes in the women's triple jump at 4 p.m. PDT and sophomore Tatiana Cornejo races in the women's 5,000 semifinals at 6:10 p.m. PDT.
