FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Three women competed for the Cal Poly track and field program during the second day of the NCAA West Prelims on Thursday at University of Arkansas' John McDonnell Field.
Graduate student Shelby Daniele (200-meter), junior Melody Nwagwu (long jump) and sophomore Lexi Evans (pole vault) all battled for berths to the NCAA Championships on Wednesday.
Evans had the strongest performance, finishing 19th overall in the pole vault — just seven places away from securing a ticket to nationals. The 2024 Big West pole vault champion cleared 13 feet, 9.25 inches, .75 inches off her collegiate best. In her second consecutive West Prelims appearance, Evans improved upon 30th-place finish at last year's meet. The San Diego native currently ranks second in school history in the pole vault.
In her first time competing at West Prelims, Nwagwu took 42nd in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 3.25 inches. The Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Year will compete in the women's triple jump at 4 p.m. PDT Saturday to wrap her showing at the meet.
In her final race as a Mustang, Daniele left it all on the track in her first West Prelims while battling through a nagging injury, grabbing 43rd in the 200 with a wind-aided time of 23.65 seconds (4.6 m/s), just .08 seconds off her wind legal lifetime best. The Clovis native finishes her Cal Poly career as a four-time All-Big West individual honoree and is currently the school record holder in the women's indoor 200, No. 2 all-time in the 100 (11.57 seconds) and No. 3 in the outdoor 200 (23.57 seconds).
Graduate student Davis Bove and sophomores Carson Smith and Rory Devaney will all compete for the Mustang men during day three of the NCAA West Prelims on Friday. Devaney is slated to take part in the men's discus at 8 a.m. PDT, while Bove and Smith will race in the quarterfinals of the men's 1,500 at 12:15 p.m. PDT. Events Friday were moved to earlier in the day due to forecasted weather in the Fayetteville area.
