SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by junior Peyton Dunkle earning First Team honors in both singles and doubles and Ellie Edles Williams being named Big West Coach of the Year, a total of four Cal Poly women's tennis players received All-Big West honors, the conference office announced Thursday.
The Mustangs' top two doubles pairings both garnered recognition as Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle secured All-Big West First Team honors at No. 1 and Melissa LaMette and Romane Mosse grabbed Second Team praise at No. 2.
All four players also nabbed All-Conference honors in singles. Peyton was named to the First Team, Delanie and Mosse both earned Second Team accolades and LaMette snagged an Honorable Mention selection.
The awards come on the heels of an incredible run by the Mustangs at the Big West Championships this past week that saw the team capture its second Big West title in program history and first since 2003. In her second year at the helm, head coach Ellie Edles Williams spearheaded Cal Poly's last season charge that allowed the program to secure its third ever trip to the NCAA Championships and first since 2011. Williams is the second coach in program history to be named Big West Coach of the Year, joining Hugh Bream (2003). In its fourth straight trip to the Big West Championship match, Cal Poly took down No. 4 seed Long Beach State 4-3 in the quarterfinals, No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara 4-2 in the semifinals and No. 6 seed Cal State Fullerton 4-3 in the final to claim conference glory. The Mustangs checked in at No. 72 in the latest ITA national team rankings released Thursday, marking the first time since the end of the 2022 season the program has been ranked. Cal Poly currently boasts a 13-8-1 record on the year and will face No. 11 seed USC at 2 p.m. Friday at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium in the first round of the NCAA Championships.
For Peyton, this is her first time garnering First Team praise in both singles and doubles. Peyton, now a three-time All-Big West honoree in doubles and a two-time All-Conference selection in singles, owns a 12-6 singles record this season and went 4-3 in Big West matches while playing primarily at the No. 2 spot. The Arroyo Grande native also went a perfect 3-0 at the Big West Championships.
Peyton and Delanie are a remarkable 13-5 together this spring in doubles, posting a 5-1 record in Big West regular season play. Last year while playing together for the first time in their collegiate careers, the Dunkles claimed All-Big West Second Team honors with a 15-8 mark at the No. 1 spot, tied for the fifth-most dual victories by a doubles pairing in a season in Division I program history.
Delanie is now a four-time All-Big West selection in doubles, becoming just the second Mustang in program history to accomplish that feat, joining Samantha Waller (2003-06). With a win in doubles in the Big West Championship triumph over the Titans, Delanie tied Chelsy Thompson and Brittany Blalock for the most career dual doubles victories in Division I program history with 54. This is Delanie's first time receiving All-Conference praise in singles. She went 5-4 in Big West play this season while playing some stiff competition at the No. 1 spot.
Mosse and LaMette have been a strong tandem all season long, posting a 10-7 mark at the No. 2 spot to grab All-Big West Second Team honors.
LaMette is now a three-time All-Conference honoree in both singles and doubles, becoming just the fifth player in program history to do so. LaMette has garnered Second Team praise in doubles three times (2021, 2022, 2024). The graduate student secured the match-clinching point for the Mustangs in all three of their victories at this year's Big West tournament while playing at the No. 5 singles spot. LaMette is 8-5 this spring and is currently No. 3 in Division I program history in career dual singles victories with 48. This is LaMette's second time being named Honorable Mention in singles. She earned Second Team praise in 2021.
Mosse, a junior who transferred to Cal Poly from Jacksonville State this past summer, has been a star on the court for the Mustangs all season long and rightfully earned Second Team accolades with her play in singles. Mosse has won 14 of her last 15 matches while playing primarily at the No. 4 or No. 5 position in the lineup, and boasts a 17-5 singles record on the year — tied for the seventh most dual singles victories in a season in Division I program history. Mosse went an impressive 8-1 in Big West regular season play.
