SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomores Tatiana Cornejo, Rory Devaney and Carson Smith all received Big West weekly awards, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The Mustangs swept the Big West Track Athlete of the Week honors as Cornejo won the women's award and Smith secured the men's award. Devaney was crowned the Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
This is the sixth time in program history and the first time since March 15, 2022, that Cal Poly has received three Big West honors during a week.
For both Cornejo and Smith, this is their first time earning Big West praise, while this is Devaney's third time grabbing conference weekly honors.
Cornejo earned the praise after running a conference-leading time in the women's 1,500-meter at the Payton Jordan Invitational this past Friday, posting a time of 4:20.70. The time is the 10th-fastest ran in school history and ranks No. 55 in the West Region this season. At the Bryan Clay Invitational just over two weeks away, Cornejo also posted the fourth-fastest 5,000 time in program history (15:56.19).
On Saturday at the Fresno State Invitational, Devaney obliterated the school record in the men's discus, tossing a lifetime best of 189 feet, 1 inch to take down Jon Mayhew's 1999 school record in the event. He bested his previous PR in the event by nearly 13 feet and bettered the old school record by almost 5 feet. The mark by the San Luis Obispo native ranks second in the Big West, 20th in the region and 38th in the nation. Devaney also took third in the hammer at the meet (207-4).
Smith also posted a top-10 mark in school history at Fresno on Saturday, running the third-fastest men's 1,500 time (3:41.48) to place first in the invitational race. The time ranks first in the Big West, 16th in the West region and No. 57 in the nation. The Temecula native is also one of just five Mustangs ever to run a sub-four-minute mile (3:59.41).
A handful of Cal Poly distance runners will be looking for regional-qualifying marks when they race in the Oxy Invitational on Saturday, while two of the Mustangs' decathletes are set to open the Big West Track & Field Championships for the team this Friday and Saturday when they compete in the multi-event portion of the meet at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex. This is the first time Cal Poly has hosted the Big West Track & Field Championships.
