FRESNO STATE INVITATIONAL RESULTS
PAYTON JORDAN INVITATIONAL RESULTS
CLOVIS, Calif. — Junior Travis Martin and sophomore Rory Devaney both shattered school records and five other top-10 marks in program history were recorded to highlight a stellar showing by the Cal Poly track and field team at the Fresno State Invitational and Payton Jordan Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
Martin started the string of historic marks by breaking the school record in the men's hammer throw at the Fresno State Invitational on Friday, tossing a lifetime best of 222 feet, 3 inches to capture first at the meet. Martin's mark broke teammate Rory Devaney's school record in the event by 5 inches and it's currently the 19th-best mark in the West Region this season and No. 24 in Division I this year. It's the sixth time this season the program record in the men's hammer has been shattered and the fifth time Martin has done it. The mark was also a new Warmerdam Field facility record.
Speaking of Devaney, he obliterated a school record of his own Saturday at Fresno, recording a lifetime best of 189 feet, 1 inch to take down Jon Mayhew's 1999 school record in the event. He bested his previous PR in the event by nearly 13 feet and bettered the old school record by almost 5 feet. Devaney's mark is currently No. 18 in the West Region and No. 36 in Division I. The San Luis Obispo native also took third in the hammer (207-4) at the meet.
Four other Mustangs posted top-10 marks in school history during the second and final day of the Fresno State Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Lexi Evans cleared a collegiate best of 13 feet, 9.75 inches in the women's pole vault to place fourth and move to No. 2 in school history in the event. The mark is currently tied for 20th in the West Region and No. 34 in the country.
Sophomore Carson Smith soared into the top 10 list in the men's 1,500-meter, running the third-fastest time in school history (3:41.48) to win the invitational race. Smith is also one of just five Mustangs ever to run a sub-four-minute mile. Smith's 1,500 time currently ranks 16th in the West Region.
Sophomore MacGregor TeSelle, the reigning Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week, cracked the top marks list in another event Saturday, running the ninth-fastest men's 400 time in program history (47.03) to secure first at the meet. TeSelle also posted the sixth-fastest time in school history in the men's 200 (20.84) earlier this season and helped the Mustangs set a Division I program record in the men's 4x400 relay at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 19.
In her first career time running the women's 3,000 steeplechase, redshirt sophomore Isabel Sanchez made sure to leave her mark, recording the ninth-best time in school history (10:49.63) to grab second.
Overall, Cal Poly won seven events at the Fresno State Invitational.
On the women's side, junior Melody Nwagwu captured first in the long jump with a season best (19-2.75) while junior Cadence Roy-Williams took third (18-7). In her return to her hometown track for the final time in her Cal Poly career, 2019 Buchanan High grad and Clovis native Shelby Daniele placed third in the 200 (23.59 seconds) and fourth in the 100 (11.69).
In the women's 1,500 invite, sophomore Sophia Nordenholz and freshman Kelli Gaffney secured third (4:31.74) and fourth (4:35.53) respectively, both recording personal bests. Junior Nina St. John won the open portion of the event (4:42.17).
Freshman Kalia Estes ran a personal best (1:01.34) to take fourth in the women's 400 hurdles, while freshman Melanie Castelli and sophomore Chase Kubinski grabbed third and fourth respectively in the high jump.
On the men's side, junior Noah Bustos won the men's long jump (22-8) and senior Joey Souto recorded a personal best of 52.69 seconds to place second in the 400 hurdles. Senior Chase Walter, TeSelle, freshman Levi Romero and Souto led Cal Poly to a runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay.
Senior Quinton Alexander snagged second in the men's 800 (1:51.93) while freshman Parker Long took third with a PR (1:52.07). Freshman Chris Caudillo, a Clovis native, earned third in the 1,500 invite with a lifetime best of 3:44.43 — tied for the 11th fastest in school history. Sophomore Lewis Westwood grabbed fourth in the 1,500 invite with a PR (3:47.24).
Walter ran a nearly full second PR in the men's 400 (47.29 seconds) to secure a second-place finish. Freshman Nathan Fifer matched his collegiate best in the men's high jump (6-5) to earn second, while freshman Isaac Knapp grabbed third (6-3.25). Senior Kevin Schmitt finished fifth in the javelin (179-8).
Only four Cal Poly distance runners took part in the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford on Friday with sophomore Tatiana Cornejo stealing the spotlight. In Section 2 of the women's 1,500, Cornejo posted a lifetime best of 4:20.70, the 10th-fastest time in school history. At the Bryan Clay Invitational two weeks away, Cornejo ran the fourth-fastest 5,000 time in program history.
Cal Poly now shifts all of its attention to the Big West Track & Field Championships. The Mustangs will host the multi-event portion of the meet this Friday and Saturday at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex, while the full conference meet will be contested the following week on May 10-11. Cal Poly will also send a few distance runners to the Oxy Invitational next Saturday at Occidental College.
