WALNUT, Calif. — Record breaking performances by the men's 4x400-meter relay and sophomore Rory Devaney highlighted action for Cal Poly track and field during the 64th Mt. SAC Relays held this Thursday through Saturday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
On Friday night, senior Chase Walter, freshman Alexander Franco, sophomore MacGregor TeSelle and senior Joey Souto helped the Mustangs post a time of 3:09.98 in the men's 4x400 — the fastest in Division I program history and the best in at least 29 years. Based on historical information that is currently available, it's also believed to be the fifth-fastest time ever ran in school history regardless of division.
The historic time allowed the men's 4x400 to capture first in the collegiate division at the meet, finishing ahead of relays from Arizona State, UC Riverside, South Florida, Northern Arizona and Long Beach State among a host of others.
In the men's hammer throw Saturday afternoon, Devaney shattered the school record in the event, recording a lifetime best toss of 221 feet, 10 inches to place third in the collegiate division. His mark broke teammate Travis Martin's program record in the event by over 4 feet. This is the fifth time this season the school record in the men's hammer has been broken. Earlier this season, Martin and Devaney shared the school record for a week after both posted the exact same mark at the Mark Conover Classic.
Last year as a true freshman, Devaney obliterated Tom Pagani's 62-year-old school record in the hammer and took third at the Big West Championships. Martin secured fourth in the hammer at the Mt. SAC Relays (216-7).
Junior Melody Nwagwu picked up right where she left off last week, improving upon her No. 5 mark in program history in the women's triple jump, recording a lifetime best of 41 feet, 8.5 inches to place third in the collegiate division and secure a bronze medal at Mt. SAC. Last Saturday at the Long Beach Invitational, Nwagwu recorded a PR of 41-7.75 in the triple jump to leap to No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time list.
TeSelle and senior Kevin Schmitt also earned third-place individual finishes at the Mt. SAC Relays. TeSelle took third in the men's collegiate 200 with a time of 20.88 seconds, just .04 seconds off his PR which ranks No. 6 in school history. Schmitt grabbed third in the men's collegiate javelin with a PR of 205-5, just 10 inches off No. 10 on Cal Poly's all-time list.
On Thursday night in the men's 10,000 elite invite, redshirt junior Colton Swinth — the defending Big West champion in the event — ran an over 48-second personal best (29:43.65) to take home a fifth-place finish.
Junior Corban Payne placed sixth in the men's collegiate shot put (56-1.25) and sophomore Rory Devaney finished seventh in the B division of the men's collegiate discus (165-1).
Cal Poly will split the squad between a pair of meets next week in its final action before hosting the Big West Championships on May 3-4 and May 10-11. The Mustangs' top distance runners head to Stanford on Friday for the Payton Jordan Invitational, while the rest of the team travels to Fresno next Friday and Saturday for the Fresno State Invitational.
