Ackerman Sets Season Blocks Record as Cal Poly Finishes Regular Season with Win Over UC San Diego

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's basketball sent it three seniors out in strong fashion in its final home game of the 2023-24 season Saturday, knocking off UC San Diego 59-52 in the regular season finale inside Mott Athletics Center.
With the win, the Mustangs (17-12, 13-7 BW) have finished fourth in the Big West standings and have earned a first-round bye in next week's Big West Championship at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nev. Cal Poly will play the winner of Wednesday's UC Davis-Cal State Fullerton game in the Quarterfinals on Thursday, March 14 at 2:30 p.m.
During the game, senior forward Natalia Ackerman made Cal Poly history as she broke the single season program blocks record. Ackerman finished with four on the night to improve her Big West leading total to 61. She also had 10 rebounds, marking her 13th game this season of double-digit rebounds.
It was a balanced offensive attack for the Mustangs as three players scored in double figures. Redshirt freshman Sierra Lichtie led the way with 14 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Sidney Richards finished with 13 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. Junior Sydney Bourland nearly had a double-double of 10 points and nine rebounds.
After leading by three following the first quarter, Cal Poly pushed the lead up to six at halftime, 28-22.
The Tritons, led by freshman Sumayah Sugapong's 19 points, cut the deficit down to three heading into the fourth quarter. However, in the fourth it was the Sidney Richards show as she scored 11 of Cal Poly's 17 points in the quarter.
Cal Poly led 50-44 with just under six minutes left before a 6-0 UCSD run tied it at 50 apiece with just under four minutes to play. However, from there the Mustangs clamped down and finished the game on a 9-2 run to claim the win.
The Mustangs' 17 wins this season are their most in a season since the 2017-18 season and the highest they've finished in the Big West standings since the 2020-21 season.
