Mustangs Fall to UC Davis in Quarterfinals of Big West Championship

HENDERSON, Nev. – Three Mustangs scored in double figures, but No. 4 seed Cal Poly saw its hopes for a Big West championship come to an end Thursday after a 56-48 loss to No. 5 seed UC Davis in the Quarterfinals of the Big West Championship.
Graduate guard Ania McNicholas led the Mustangs (17-13) with 17 points, six assists and six rebounds. Freshman Mary Carter and redshirt freshman Sierra Lichtie both added 10 points for Cal Poly, whose strong defensive effort kept them in the game despite a tough shooting game.
Even though the Mustangs came out struggling to score in the first quarter, they held UC Davis to just two points in the first four minutes and only trailed 13-6 heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Cal Poly cut the UC Davis lead down to 15-10 before a 7-0 Aggie run pushed their lead up to 22-10 with just under five minutes left. The Mustangs were able to be within 10 at halftime, 28-18.
Cal Poly scored the first basket of the second half to get it down to eight before a UC Davis 6-0 run made it 34-20. The Mustangs buckled down defensively from there, holding the Aggies without a point over the next five minutes as they scored the six straight points to get it back down to eight with just under two minutes left in the third.
Trailing 41-30 heading into the fourth quarter, the Mustangs continued to chip away at the UC Davis lead and got it down to six with three minutes left. Forcing Davis into turnovers, Cal Poly got it down to five with a minute left. Carter made a bucket with 31 seconds left to get it down to four but were unable to get closer.
Having had a strong season in which they won 17 games and finished tied for third in the Big West regular season standings, Cal Poly will hope it gets to continue its season with an invite to the WNIT. The 48-team tournament will be selected Sunday, March 17 with first round action taking place March 20-22.
