Mustangs’ Strong Season Comes to an End with WNIT Loss to Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – Freshman forward Mary Carter knocked down four threes but Cal Poly saw their strong 2023-24 season come to an end Thursday after a 63-43 road loss to Pacific in the first round of the WNIT.
Carter had a strong final game to her freshman campaign. The Big West All-Freshman Team selection led the Mustangs (17-14) with 12 points in addition to seven rebounds. Junior guard Annika Shah also finished in double figures with 10 points for Cal Poly, who were without their leading scorer, rebounder, and shot blocker in senior forward Natalia Ackerman due to injury.
Cal Poly found itself trailing 10-2 six minutes into the first quarter and 14-4 heading into the second quarter.
Down 17-7 with seven minutes left in the half, the Mustangs got back in it with an 8-2 run to make it 19-15 two minutes later. However, Pacific went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to push their lead up to 30-15. Cal Poly was able to close the half on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit down to seven at halftime.
The Tigers pushed their lead up to 10 after the third quarter. The Mustangs were able to cut it down to eight early in the fourth but were unable to draw closer than that.
It was a banner season for the Mustangs as they won 17 games for the first time since the 2017-18 season, had a tied for third-place in the Big West finish during the regular season, and made the WNIT Postseason Tournament for the first time in 10 years. Plenty of good to look forward to for the future of the Cal Poly women's basketball program.
