LIVE RESULTS
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program opens the outdoor portion of its season this Wednesday through Friday at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
The first two days of the meet Wednesday and Thursday will consist solely of the decathlon and heptathlon, while the rest of the events will be contested Friday.
The Sam Adams Multis begin at noon Wednesday and Thursday, while the remaining events in the UCSB Invitational will start at 9 a.m. Friday.
Over 50 Mustangs are slated to compete in the meet. Senior Nick Gammal and freshman Isaac Knapp will both take part in the decathlon, while freshman Bella Martinez is entered in the heptathlon.
Cal Poly is fresh off a successful indoor campaign that saw the men's team shatter or establish 10 program records, and the women's squad record 10 new top-five marks in school history. Graduate student Shelby Daniele, who broke her own school record in the women's 200-meter this indoor season, is set to race in the 100-meter Friday at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational. She is currently tied with teammate Jadyn Snaer and Patrice Carpenter for No. 2 all-time in school history in the event (11.58 seconds).
Last outdoor season, the Mustangs saw 24 new top-10 marks in program history recorded across the men's and women's teams and three school records fall. Aidan McCarthy, who is a redshirt junior this spring, shattered the school records in the men's 800 (1:46.26) and 1,500 (3:39.56) while Rory Devaney, a sophomore this spring, obliterated a 62-year-old program record in the men's hammer throw (202 feet, 4 inches) as a true freshman. McCarthy went on to place seventh in the 800 at the NCAA Championships, becoming the first Mustang in 12 years to earn First Team All-American honors.
Following the UCSB Invitational, Cal Poly returns home to host the second annual Mark Conover Classic on March 22-23 at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.
