No. 9 Mustangs Beat No. 7 Long Beach St., No. 12 Hawai’i, Sac State to Win Big West Challenge

DAVIS/SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Cal Poly beach volleyball continues to be one of the top teams in the nation, going 3-0 again Sunday by beating No. 7 Long Beach State, No. 12 Hawai'i, and Sacramento State to win the Big West Challenge after going a perfect 6-0 in the weekend event held up in Davis and nearby Sacramento. The No. 9 Mustangs stretched their win streak to 15 in a row and overall record to 20-2 after beating No. 7 Long Beach State 4-1 and swept No. 12 Hawai'i and Sacramento State 5-0. The win over the No. 7 Beach was revenge after Long Beach State beat them in the finals of the Big West Championship last season. The pairing of Abbey Reinard and Madison Nichols went 3-0 on the day while playing two matches at the No. 4 spot and one at the No. 3 spot. They are now 11-4 together and have won six straight this season. The No. 1 duo of Ella Connor and Izzy Martinez were 2-0 on the day together and are now 17-4 and have won 11 matches in a row. Also 2-0 were the No. 5 tandem of Piper Naess and Logan Walter, who are now 11-3 and have won eight straight matches, as well as the No. 3 pair of Lindsey Sparks and Quinn Perry, who are 8-1 and have won six in a row together. For the Big West Challenge this weekend, Cal Poly won by scores of 5-0 in four of the six matches, winning the other two 4-1. With a record of 20-2, Cal Poly is one of five teams in Division I with just two losses and has the most wins of teams with two losses. The Mustangs now head to Berkeley on Tuesday to face Feather River College at 12:30 p.m. and No. 6 Cal at 2:30 p.m.
