No. 7 Mustangs Continue to Rack up Wins After Taking Down No. 6 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. — Cal Poly beach volleyball is officially the hottest team in the nation right now. The Mustangs, who jumped up in the AVCA rankings today to No. 7, kept their winning ways going Tuesday with a 4-1 road victory over No. 6 Cal to stretch their streak to 16 straight, the longest active stretch in the country.
The No. 7 Mustangs beat the No. 6 Golden Bears after first taking down Feather River College in an exhibition match 5-0 earlier in the day. Cal Poly now owns a 21-2 record. The 21 wins are the most in Division I currently.
Against No. 6 Cal, Cal Poly's No. 2 pair of Piper Ferch and Erin Inkseep started off the match the way they have all season, winning in three sets 21-18, 14-21, 15-11. They lead the team in wins with a 19-3 record and have won nine of their last 10.
The Golden Bears then tied it with a win at the No. 4 spot before the Mustangs took the lead back after the No. 1 duo of Ella Connor and Izzy Martinez won their match 21-14, 21-14. Connor and Martinez have now won 12 straight matches and are 18-4 on the season.
The dual was then clinched after the Mustangs' No. 5 pair of Piper Naess and Logan Walter battled back-and-forth to win a long match in three sets, 19-21, 21-18. 20-18. They are 12-3 together this year and have won nine in a row.
Also getting a victory was Cal Poly's No. 3 tandem of Quinn Perry and Lindsey Sparks, 14-21, 21-19, 15-12. They are also red hot as well, improving to 9-1 together and have won seven straight.
Cal Poly will be off until April 6 when they head down to Laguna Beach to face the University of St. Katherine for another exhibition match as well as No. 8 Long Beach State.
