Mustangs Drop Home Match to No. 67 Rice
3/14/2024 9:00:00 PM | Men's Tennis
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt senior Fernando Fonseca and senior Noah Berry both secured singles victories, but the Cal Poly men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 67 Rice on Thursday at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
After the Mustangs (4-5) dropped the doubles point with defeats at No. 2 and No. 3, Berry leveled the dual at 1-1 with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 singles spot. It was Berry's third straight win.
Then the Owls (9-6) earned wins at No. 6, No. 3 and No. 5 to clinch the dual victory.
Despite the dual already being wrapped up, Fonseca continued to battle until the bitter end in his match at No. 4 and emerged victorious. While fighting through cramps, Fonseca was able to capture a 10-5 super tiebreaker victory in the third set to improve to 3-1 on the year.
After falling short in the first set, redshirt senior Joe Leather (No. 2) and junior Bastiaan Weststrate (No. 5) were both able to force third sets in their matches. Redshirt senior Colter Smith also won a set in his match at No. 3.
Cal Poly continues its five-match homestand at noon Saturday when they host Loyola Marymount (5-4) at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
