SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — With Cal Poly's third sweep in four matches and fourth consecutive sweep over CSUN in the last two years, Caroline Walters became the fifth Mustangs head coach to reach the century-wins mark.
Breklyn Pulling shined in Cal Poly's blocking game as the redshirt sophomore transfer helped the Mustangs tally double-digit total blocks for the fourth time in three weeks. Pulling set her new single-match career high with eight block assists.
While enjoying her recent resurgence in the starting lineup, Amy Hiatt also assisted in the net-front battle with five block assists; even Emme Bullis tallied three as a setter. Chloe Leluge followed closely behind with a pair of blocks but was also second on the team with nine kills.
Tommi Stockham looked back to her usual self with consistent production off her typically high volume of attacks, leading the Mustangs with 14 kills to pair with five digs. Five different Mustangs picked up at least five kills as the team collectively hit .275 in the match.
The match began unusually messy, littered with short rallies and contested balls over the net. The Mustangs were able to break an early tie and pull ahead by two points on multiple occasions but were overturned by CSUN's 6-2 run after Cal Poly was ahead 7-5.
The Matadors surged back ahead to 14-12 before the Mustangs rallied for three straight points to go up 15-14 at the media break. CSUN picked up four points right out of the timeout and extended the run in a back-and-forth race to the end of the set.
Despite going up 23-22 thanks to consistent kills, the Matadors relinquished the lead once more with a kill from Stockham to tie 23-all before two attacking errors in a row to allow Cal Poly a 25-23 opening set win.
Cal Poly set a controlling tone in set two with a blazing 6-1 start to open. Leluge and Stockham unloaded on CSUN with multiple kills as the Mustangs never gave up the lead despite a strong push late in the set by the Matadors. Cal Poly road that led to a 25-20 set two victory, putting CSUN on its back foot.
The decisive and nail-biting third set started with Cal Poly and CSUN trading three-point runs before the Matadors finally found some consistency and entered a 10-7 lead they enjoyed very shortly. The Mustangs fought back with a 7-3 run that included a trio of kills from Stockham to retake the lead at 14-13.
CSUN's Hailey Brockway picked up five kills in 16 points as the Matadors looked to steal a third set, putting Cal Poly behind 23-20, but the Mustangs would not relent and snatched three points to tie.
The Matadors went up 25-24 and nearly won the set on a challenge that would have overturned a 25-25 tie for Cal Poly, but the Mustangs rallied behind the failed challenge and scored three straight points for the 27-25 set and match win.
