Mustangs Notch Yet Another Sweep to Remain Tied for First Place
11/15/2024 10:15:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Leaning on Tommi Stockham's 14 kills, Cal Poly (18-8, 11-4 BWC) overcame multiple deficits throughout the match to notch its third consecutive sweep with Friday night's win over Cal State Fullerton (25-21, 25-22, 25-21).
On paper, the Mustangs and Titans had a statistically even match, but Cal Poly's perseverance in the face of a tenacious Cal State Fullerton attack proved the difference. The match featured 21 ties and 10 lead changes with the Titans earning substantial leads at various points throughout the second and third sets.
Cal Poly hit just .220 as a team but played solid enough defense to make Fullerton struggle to just .108 hitting, the third lowest an opponent has put together against the Mustangs this season. A large part of that was Cal Poly throwing up double-digit blocks (10) for the 10th time in 2024, led by Breklyn Pulling's team-leading five total blocks.
Chloe Leluge and Amy Hiatt were just behind Pulling with four blocks apiece, which kept Pulling and Leluge tied for fifth in the Big West. Elif Hurriyet greatly added to the defensive side of Cal Poly's game with 11 digs, her 17th double-digit total this year.
Leluge also remained in the conference lead for hitting percentage with .367 after coming up with eight kills against Cal State Fullerton while making just two errors. Hiatt, after starting the season slowly, is capping off her final year of eligibility in fashion as she has recorded at least six kills in the last eight matches, including four consecutive double-digit efforts from Oct. 24 to Nov. 2.
Emme Bullis jumped back onto her usual pace with 33 assists for 10.41 per set, inching her close to Kate Lang's conference-leading 10.46 per set. Bullis has totaled at least 30 assists in all but three matches this season.
The Mustangs opened the first set on a 5-2 run, attempting to set a defining tone for the match, but Fullerton battled back to a quick 9-9 tie early on. Cal Poly managed a 15-13 lead at the media break with two consecutive Pulling-assisted blocks right out of the timeout that extended the Mustang lead.
A strong 8-3 CSF run after those blocks finally put the Titans ahead 21-20, but Cal Poly cruised to a 25-21 set win thanks in part to four straight points on Ella Scott's expert serving. Bullis provided 18 assists in that first set alone as Hiatt was the match's kills leader (5) up to that point, hitting .571 with a single error.
Fullerton swung the momentum and rushed to a 5-0 run in the second set before Head Coach Caroline Walters called a timeout to stop the bleeding. Fullerton pushed to a 7-2 lead, but Cal Poly went on an incredible 12-7 run to tie the match again. That second set went back-and-forth after that tie until the Mustangs finally broke through for their own lengthy lead at 23-18, winning 25-22.
The third and final set had ten ties and five lead changes, many coming in the first part of the frame. Cal State Fullerton went ahead briefly with a four-point gap at 13-9 before the Mustangs clawed back point-by-point until the match at 20-all despite the Titans leading since 10-9. Cal Poly pulled ahead for their own 22-21 lead for the first time since 6-5 earlier in the set and cruised through the final three points.
