Cal Poly Clinches Big West Championship Spot With Fourth Straight Sweep
11/16/2024 9:20:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Mustangs (19-8, 12-4 BWC) are set to remain in first place after pummeling the visiting UC Irvine Anteaters (25-17, 25-12, 25-13) on senior night. Cal Poly has now clinched a spot in the Big West Championship field while still having a clear shot at one of the top two bye spots.
In her final home game at Mott Athletics Center, Tommi Stockham played arguably her best match of the season, hammering down 18 kills to reset her season-high in a three-set game while hitting .500 and collecting seven digs, the second most on the team. That takes her per-set pace to 3.71, which separates her as the second-best in the conference.
Chloe Leluge and Amy Hiatt were once again errorless as the pair combined for two blocks together while hitting .667 and .429 respectively. Leluge continues to pace the Big West with a .373 hitting clip on the season. Alongside Leluge and Hiatt, Breklyn Pulling totaled another five blocks to help Cal Poly crack double-digits for the 11th time this season and the third match in a row.
Also celebrating her final career home match, Lizzy Markovska was on fire tonight offensively, second on the team with nine kills while also providing a trio of service aces. Fellow senior Kirra Kellerman, who has notched just four sets in her career due to injuries, easily enjoyed her best match, totaling two kills on five attacks.
Elif Hurriyet and Emme Bullis were rock solid as usual with Bullis assisting 31 times to pair with six digs, while Hurriyet tallied a career-high seven assists alongside 11 digs. Hurriyet co-led the match with three service aces.
Cal Poly rocketed to an 11-3 start in the first set before UCI decided to take a timeout. That start was largely due to the Mustangs hitting 8-for-9 at a .889 clip with no errors while racking up three points on blocks alone.
Cal Poly stretched that lead with a 7-0 run through the timeout and did not have an attacking error until 18-11. Despite a hard push near the end of the set, it was too little, too late as Cal Poly breezed to a 25-17 set win.
Markovska enjoyed a few large runs off her serves tonight, including a decent stretch that helped Cal Poly combat UC Irvine's improved play in the second set. Stockham had already eclipsed double-digit kills by the time Cal Poly was up 8-6.
A 10-4 run through the middle of the set helped the Mustangs separate from the Anteaters to go up 18-10, as Stockham and Markovska combined for 43 of the match's attacks thus far. The Mustangs allowed only two more points while running away with a 25-12 second set victory.
The Mustangs rushed to a 13-4 start before UC Irvine started its small run to try and salvage a set, but Cal Poly stood strong and went point-for-point with the Anteaters to secure a 25-13 third set and playoff spot.
One final weekend remains as Cal Poly takes on UC Riverside and UC Davis to close the season on the road.
