Cal Poly Steals Tiebreaker Win, Sets Up Bye-Clinching Implications vs. UC Davis
11/21/2024 9:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Mustangs (20- 8, 13-4 BWC) became the first team in the Big West this season to reach 20 overall wins with a nail-biting tiebreaker victory (23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12) over UC Riverside.
Cal Poly temporarily occupies first place alongside UC Davis until Hawai'i plays tomorrow, which currently sets the stage for a matchup against the Aggies in which the winner will guarantee at least a first-round bye in the Big West Championship.
Tommi Stockham led the way with a 17 kills and 12 digs double-double as three Mustangs posted double-digit kills and five notched double-digit digs. Breklyn Pulling also enjoyed a fantastic night offensively, gathering a career-high resetting 16 kills on top of leading the match with seven total blocks.
Chloe Leluge and Amy Hiatt once again proved a dangerous blocking duo with four total blocks apiece while Leluge came up third on the team with 11 kills. Cal Poly's 12 total blocks as a team were the third-most this season for a Mustang single match.
Headed by reigning freshman of the week Elif Hurriyet (22 digs), London Haberfield (10), Emme Bullis (11), Stockham (12), and Lizzy Markovska (13) helped the Mustangs hold UC Riverside to .184 hitting while collecting their fourth-most digs in a single match this season (82).
Bullis supplied 44 assists to go along with her 11 digs for a double-double and helped Cal Poly to a .250 team-hitting percentage with the third most kills this season as a team (60).
To open the match, Cal Poly was off to its usual runaway speed at 18-13 before UCR finally found consistent answers. A 6-1 run after that Mustang lead tied the match at 19-all, but the Highlanders rode the momentum to a 25-23 opening frame win.
The Mustangs came back with a vengeance in the second set and dominated the entire way through with a huge 25-13 set-tying victory, including seven straight points to close the frame. The Mustangs faced little resistance in the next set, going on to win 25-18, seemingly setting up Cal Poly for an easy match win.
However, UC Riverside roared out to an 11-4 lead in the fourth set and never looked back despite Cal Poly pulling within four points near the end. The Highlanders forced a tie-breaking fifth set at 25-19.
UCR looked in relative control to start the final set, even enjoying a three-point run to take a 9-8 lead and put the Mustangs on their back foot. Cal Poly responded in kind with its own 6-1 run to put the match out of reach and take it 15-12.
One final match remains for the Mustangs as they stay in first place tied with the team they will place on Saturday afternoon.
