Cal Poly Routs Cal State Bakersfield to Regain Second-Place Tie
11/8/2024 9:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Mustangs allowed their lowest points total (46) to an opponent this season in an utter domination of Cal State Bakersfield on Friday night (25-20, 25-13, 25-13), vaulting Cal Poly (16-8, 9-4 BWC) back into a second-place tie for the Big West.
Five different Mustangs tallied at least seven kills in a match where they played relatively consistent in profiting from Cal State Bakersfield's 15 errors. Despite committing 11 errors of their own, the Mustangs still hit .357 as a team with Lizzy Markovska leading the way in kills (10) while holding the Roadrunners to a paltry 24 kills, by far the lowest opposition total for Cal Poly this season.
From a hitting percentage angle, this was the 4th highest mark for Cal Poly in 2024 while tallying the 4th lowest number of errors. Chloe Leluge was a massive part of Cal Poly's high-hitting clip, totaling eight kills with no errors for a remarkable .800 individual hitting percentage, also co-leading the team with a pair of block assists. Middle-blocking partner Breklyn Pulling also enjoyed a great offensive effort, picking up seven kills.
Once again, Elif Hurriyet crossed the double-digit digs threshold (10) for the sixth consecutive match, helping hold the Roadrunners to just .106 hitting. Along with notching yet another 30+ assists performance, Emme Bullis was second on the team with seven digs and more impressively served up a season-high five aces.
The first set started calmly and somewhat slow before a point for CSUB, which put the score at 4-4, as head coach Caroline Walters called for a net challenge that overturned the decision to a 5-3 lead for Cal Poly. Riding that momentum, the Mustangs sprinted to a 17-10 lead, taking advantage of Bakersfield's numerous errors.
Even so, the `Runners clawed back into the set with four straight points out of their timeout and took Cal Poly to just a 19-17 lead. Thanks in part to Leluge's perfect 1.000% hitting with four kills, Cal Poly found even footing again and closed out the set 25-20. At that point, the entire starting lineup aside from Bullis and Elif Hurriyet had at least three kills, while Bullis tallied an astounding 15 set assists.
It was a back-and-forth start in the second set until Cal Poly broke through with a 4-1 run that took the Mustangs to a 9-5 lead. A five-point service run from Bullis helped Cal Poly to extend the score to 13-5, putting CSUB on its back foot to the point of subbing in almost every available player. Cal Poly cruised right to a 25-13 set win despite hitting just .258 with five errors.
Cal Poly needed only 18 total attacks to repeat the second set resulting in a third-set win. The Roadrunners jumped out to a 3-0 start, their largest lead of the match, but Cal Poly blazed back on an 8-1 run to lead 8-4 before the opposition could find answers again. CSUB climbed back to two points down at 11-9, but the Mustangs floored the pedal once again and exploded for a 14-4 run to take the final match-winning set 25-13.
With that 3-0 win, the Mustangs have not only tallied their highest number of sweeps (11) since 2019 but also put themselves within one match of getting head coach Caroline Walters to 100 career wins. Cal Poly and CSUN face off in Mott Athletics Center on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. as the Mustangs look to emulate Friday's success.
