Mustangs Fall to First Place Hawai’i on the Road
11/3/2024 12:45:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
HONOLULU — Amy Hiatt notched her fourth consecutive match of double-digit kills with 10 this match and a .333 hitting percentage, racking up four total blocks in the process, as Cal Poly (15-8, 8-4 BWC) fell to now first place Hawai'i in four sets (19-25, 12-25, 25-15, 20-25).
Chloe Leluge remains one of the Big West's best first years as she blocked the best offense in the conference 6 times along with middle blocker partner Breklyn Pulling tallying the same amount.
Together, they helped Cal Poly put up 13 total blocks, which was the team's second-best single-match total this season. Leluge and Pulling also matched with 8 kills apiece, coming just behind Hiatt for the second most on the team.
The Mustangs adjusted and transitioned to a 6-2 formation mid-match with Samantha Callahan coming in to assist Bullis. That change made a difference for the Mustangs and gave them the opportunity to come back after a third-set win.
The Mustangs kept within a couple of points through the early part of the opening set but quickly fell behind during a small run before taking a timeout down 9-4.
Cal Poly struggled to stop the Rainbow Wahine from earning kills-upon-kills as Hawai'i extended the run to a 6-7 point lead on multiple occasions.
A few different Mustangs found ways to contribute as they finally found a groove and took four of five points after Hawai'i had a 21-11 lead. With Cal Poly down 22-15, the Rainbow Wahine felt the pressure and regrouped with a timeout.
Stockham, Beshear, Hiatt, and Leluge all got involved in helping Cal Poly narrow the lead once more with three consecutive points out of the timeout, 22-18 before Hawai'i finally answered again. Despite a heavy shift in momentum, Hawai'i recovered to pick up three of the next four points for a set win.
Unlike the first time this season these two foes faced off, the Mustangs could not contain Caylen Alexander early with the outside hitter tallying seven kills and just one error as Hawai'i hit .314 for the set.
Hawai'i came out hot in the second set, jumping to a dominant 8-2 lead before Cal Poly put on the brakes with a timeout. The Mustangs enjoyed a 5-3 run to close the gap at 7-11 but the Rainbow Wahine slammed on the gas and sped away with a 25-12 second set victory.
After a nightmarish second set, the Mustangs found success in the third with their first multi-point lead of the match, opening the set on a 9-4 run with six of those points off Hawai'i errors.
Leluge continued blocking excellently with help from Amy Hiatt on the right side as Cal Poly, leading 15-11, held Hawai'i at arm's length by the media timeout. To that point, Leluge and Hiatt co-led the team with 6 kills while combining for just as many total blocks.
Continuous errors from Hawai'i alongside Hiatt's .429 hitting percentage thus far in the third set gave Cal Poly a commanding 18-13 lead as the Rainbow Wahine were forced to call for a break to regroup and try to battle back against a rolling Mustangs squad.
That stoppage did nothing to stop Cal Poly. The Mustangs kept Hawai'i hitting in the negative while breezing to a message-sending 25-15 third-set win. Cal Poly hit .296 in that frame and tallied 4.5 total blocks.
Riding the set-win momentum, Cal Poly kept up with Hawai'i entering the fourth set as the teams traded points for the entire first half of the set, but the Rainbow Wahine pulled ahead just before the media timeout at 15-14.
The Mustangs tried to come back once again with a decent run near the end of the set, but Hawai'i had little trouble ending the fourth set and the match at 25-20.
The Mustangs are now tied for third in the Big West with UC Irvine and UC San Diego. They are back at home for four straight matches as Cal State Bakersfield and CSUN come to San Luis Obispo next weekend.
