Mustangs Fall to Stanford After Second Half Cardinal Surge

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Cal Poly put together an impressive first half, trailing women's basketball powerhouse Stanford by just eight at halftime, but a 58 percent shooting outburst by the Cardinal in the second half saw the Mustangs fall Monday night in Maples Pavilion, 81-45.
Senior guard and Palo Alto native Annika Shah and sophomore forward Mary Carter paced the Mustangs (3-4) with 12 points apiece. Senior guard Sidney Richards added eight points and redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie added six points.
Stanford got out to a 9-0 lead to begin game before Cal Poly responded to get it down to 13-7. The Mustangs made four of their first five shots in the second quarter to get within six, 22-16.
Cal Poly's tough defense limited the Cardinal to converting just one of their final eight shots to finish the first half as Cal Poly hung tough, trailing just 33-25 at halftime.
Stanford opened the second half with an 11-0 run over the first four minutes to go up 44-25. The Cardinal held that lead the rest of the third, taking a 61-41 advantage into the fourth quarter and never looked back.
Cal Poly will now have 10 days off before playing its first conference game of the season when hosting UC Davis at Mott Athletics Center on Dec. 5. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
