12/5/2024 10:50:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three Mustangs scored in double figures, but the Cal Poly women's basketball was just edged out in its first game of Big West play Thursday, falling to UC Davis 66-60 inside Mott Athletics Center.
Senior guard Annika Shah led the Mustangs (3-5, 0-1 Big West) with 18 points as she was 4-8 from three. Redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie nearly had a double-double, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Aggies (4-4, 1-0 Big West) finished the first quarter strong with a 12-2 run thanks to efficient shooting inside the pain as they took a 22-15 lead into the second quarter. As a team, UC Davis finished the game with 36 points in the paint while shooting 51 percent.
UC Davis led by as much as 11 in the second quarter before Cal Poly scored the final four points of the quarter to cut the deficit down to seven at halftime, 34-27.
The Mustangs opened the second half strong with a 7-2 run to get back within two and trailed by just two points heading into the fourth quarter. With Cal Poly trailing by three midway through the fourth, a 6-0 run by the Aggies over a three minute stretch pushed their lead up to nine with just under three minutes to play.
Cal Poly continued to fight and claw to stay in the game, eventually cutting the UC Davis lead down to four with 16 seconds left. However, the Aggies made their free throws down the stretch to prevent the Mustangs from completing the comeback.
The Mustangs hit the road to take on CSUN Saturday. Tip off in Northridge is set for 2 p.m. with the game airing on ESPN+.
