SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling team will officially get its eight-dual home slate and 2024-25 season underway on Sunday when the Mustangs welcome No. 30 Indiana to Mott Athletics Center for a 1 p.m. dual.
Tickets to Sunday’s home opener can be purchased HERE. It’s also Youth Day so any kids 17 years old or younger can get into the dual for free.
Sunday’s dual will be streamed for free live on the Cal Poly Wrestling X/Twitter account (@CalPolyWrestle) and simultaneously on FloWrestling with the purchase of a subscription.
This season, the Mustangs are looking to build off yet another banner year for the program and bring back plenty of experience and talent to do just that. Cal Poly returns 23 wrestlers and nine of its 10 starters from a year ago, including all five of its 2023-24 NCAA Championship qualifiers — Zeth Romney, Chance Lamer, Legend Lamer, Adam Kemp and Trevor Tinker.
Those five returning NCAA qualifiers all enter the season nationally ranked with redshirt junior Chance Lamer leading the way, checking in at No. 9 in the country at 149 pounds. In 2023-24, Chance went 19-6 in his first year as a Mustang and finished one victory short of securing All-American honors.
Kemp, who is entering his seventh and final year of collegiate wrestling, is ranked 11th in the country at 174 pounds, Tinker 17th at 285, Legend 19th at 157 and Romney 23rd at 133.
Indiana, ranked 30th in the InterMat preseason dual rankings, already opened its season, thumping Cal Baptist 34-4 on Friday in Riverside. The Hoosiers will have six ranked wrestlers in their lineup when they take on the Mustangs. Sunday’s dual will feature two ranked vs. ranked opponents with No. 23 Romney set to face No. 25 Angelo Rini from Indiana at 133 pounds, and No. 17 Tinker scheduled to battle No. 16 Jacob Bullock from Indiana at heavyweight.
Following Sunday’s dual, Cal Poly will travel to Kansas City to compete in the Tiger Style Invite hosted by Missouri next Saturday, Nov. 9.
