SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt junior Trevor Tinker secured a dominant victory over a ranked opponent and redshirt junior Chance Lamer and redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney also earned wins, but the Cal Poly wrestling team fell to No. 30 Indiana 31-11 on Sunday at Mott Athletics Center to open its 2024-25 season.

In its first of eight home duals this season, the Mustangs won three of 10 matches against an extremely talented Hoosiers (2-0) squad that had six ranked wrestlers in their lineup.

With the dual already wrapped up for Indiana, Tinker stepped on the mat for the final bout of the day at heavyweight looking to end the match on a high note for the Mustangs.

Tinker, ranked No. 17 in the country at 285 pounds, took it to No. 16 Jacob Bullock from Indiana early, earning two takedowns and a 4-point near fall in the first period to jump ahead 10-1. Tinker finished the job in the second period, grabbing a takedown and another 4-point near fall to capture a 17-1 technical fall victory 3:40 into the bout.

The Simi Valley native is currently ranked 23rd in the nation in his weight class and last season became the program's first multiple-time Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week award winner.

After redshirt sophomore Korbin Shepherd, a transfer from Missouri, came up short in his Mustang debut at 141 pounds, Lamer earned a thrilling win at 149. The two-time NCAA qualifier secured a takedown with about 30 seconds left in the bout to snag a tightly-contested 4-1 decision over Indiana's Anthony Bahl. Lamer is currently ranked No. 9 in the country.
