FAIRFAX – One day after opening California’s Alister Mackenzie Invitational with a new Cal Poly men’s golf single-round record of 63, Baron Szeto set a new three-round program mark as the senior carded a final-round 65 Tuesday to finish with an 18-under 195 at the par-71, 6,734-yard Meadow Club.
Szeto, who produced seven birdies during Tuesday’s final round and compiled 24 for the tournament, eclipsed the previous program three-round record of 199, set by Chris Kirk at the April 2-3, 2007 Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. Recording the third lowest round in program history Tuesday, Szeto also became just the second Mustang to finish a tournament under 200 strokes.
The reigning Big West Player of the Month following his playoff victory at Wake Forest’s Lyon’s Links Invitational at Royal Dublin Golf Club, Szeto – seeking his third career victory – finished five strokes behind San Jose State’s Zubair Firdaus.
As a program, Cal Poly set a new program tournament record with a 32-under 820 (274-272-274), besting last year’s 826 at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational.
Elsewhere on the leaderboard for Cal Poly, sophomore Reese Sato finished with a 68 Tuesday that included seven birdies. Sato’s three-round, nine-under 204 (67-69-68) clinched a share of 23rd place alongside senior Parker Mapes, who birdied four of his first eight holes Tuesday to finish with a three-under 68 en route to his 204 (67-69-68).
Sophomore Louis Pilod climbed 16 spots on the leaderboard Tuesday with a four-under 67 built on five birdies. Four strokes better than his Monday opening round, Pilod’s three-under 210 (71-72-67) clinched 51st spot.
Senior Jackson Parrish produced three birdies Tuesday, but settled for a three-over 74 and a three-round, four-over 217 (75-68-74). Also finishing with a 217 (73-68-76) was sophomore Leo Metzger.
Cal Poly resumes action and completes its fall schedule when hosting its Preserve Golf Club Collegiate, set for Oct. 28-29 at The Preserve in Carmel Valley, Calif.
