SAN LUIS OBISPO – Having already celebrated an individual tournament champion and established new tournament scoring records, the Cal Poly men’s golf program completes a successful fall campaign when hosting the Oct. 28-29 Preserve Golf Club Collegiate.
Play at The Preserve Golf Club in Carmel Valley, Calif., consists of 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 28 before a final-round of 18 holes on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Named by Golf Digest both as one of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses and the best in California course for 14 successive years, the par-72 Preserve covers 7,041 yards set within The Santa Lucia Preserve.
The 12-program field for 2024 consists of 20th-ranked Utah, California, Colorado State, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Long, Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State and UCLA. California is the defending tournament champion after firing a 21-under 843 to outduel UCLA by five strokes.
The Mustangs enter this year’s Preserve Collegiate having just set new program scoring records for 18 holes (12-under 272), 36 holes (22-under 546) and 54 holes (32-under 820) during a ninth-place finish at California’s Oct. 7-8 Alister Mackenzie Invitational at The Meadow Club (Fairfax, Calif.).
Individually, senior Baron Szeto finished second at the Mackenzie Invitational with an 18-under 195 to set new program marks for lowest single round (63) and lowest three-round total.
Szeto’s second-place finish followed a title-winning effort at Wake Forest’s Sept. 18-20 Lyon’s Links Invitational at Royal Dublin Golf Club. Szeto overturned a three-stroke deficit during the final round in Ireland to prevail in a playoff for his second collegiate title and first since sharing the 2023 Big West Championship.
Following the Preserve Golf Club Collegiate, Cal Poly resumes season action at Eastern Kentucky’s Feb. 16-18 Mesquite Desert Classic at Casablanca Golf Club (Mesquite, Nev.).
