
Roothman Wins Singles Flight at UCSB Classic

GOLETA, Calif. — Cal Poly men's tennis sophomore Wian Roothman won his first collegiate fall tournament event as he took home the Flight D Singles title over the weekend at the UCSB Classic to highlight the Mustangs.
Roothman won three matches without dropping a set on his way to winning the title. He started by beating Ellison Greco of Saint Mary's in the first round, 6-1, 6-1. He then took down Inigo Diaz of LMU in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-2. He capped off the weekend by beating UC San Diego's James Krantz in the championship match in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-1 to bring the title back to San Luis Obispo.
Elsewhere for the Mustangs, senior Bastiaan Weststrate reached the finals of the B Singles Flight. He beat Jacopo Denitto of LMU, Perry Di Giulio of UC Davis, and Gustav Theilgaard of UCSB on the way to reaching the finals. He ultimately fell in the championship match to Alexander Watanabe Eriksson of Santa Clara.
In doubles, the Mustang duos of Weststrate and freshman Jack Cross as well as sophomores Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev both reached the semifinals of the Flight A Doubles bracket. Reaching the semifinals of the Flight C Doubles bracket was freshman Jack McGary and sophomore Sean Ferguson.
Up next this fall for Cal Poly is the ITA Southwest Regional in Tempe, Ariz. Oct. 17-22.
