LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis team opened its 2024 fall season with some strong performances at the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament this Thursday through Sunday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
The Mustangs battled players from host Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Hawai’i, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego during the four-day tourney.
Senior Peyton Dunkle made it to the semifinals in the singles main draw with a 4-1 record. She won her first two matches in straight sets and then earned a pair of three-set victories in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals. Last year, Dunkle was an All-Big West First Team honoree in singles and doubles.
In doubles action, senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock also advanced to the semifinals in the main draw. The duo posted a 3-1 record, earning 8-1, 8-2 and 8-4 victories.
Dunkle and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather teamed up to secure two wins in doubles play and earn a spot in the Round of 16. All five of Cal Poly’s doubles pairings in the main draw grabbed at least one victory at the tournament, going a perfect 5-0 on day one of the event Thursday.
Junior Alexandra Ozerets made it to the Round of 16 in singles play with two wins. Nine of Cal Poly’s 10 players that took part in the tourney captured at least one victory in singles and doubles, including freshman Anushree Shekhera who made her collegiate debut down in Long Beach.
Cal Poly continues its fall season in less than two weeks when the team travels to the San Diego area for a pair of tournaments, sending a handful of players to the ITA Southwest Regionals hosted by University of San Diego on Oct. 17-22, while the rest of the team will compete in the Triton Fall Invitational hosted by UC San Diego on Oct. 17-20.
