SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Mustangs remain at home for a Blue-Green rivalry meet-up against UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 4 at Anderson Aquatics Center. In what is almost always a tightly-contested affair, Cal Poly will be swimming for one of its teams' first wins over the Gauchos since 2021-22.
Last season, both the men and women of UC Santa Barbara came up just short of the MPSF Championships for their respective groups, placing second behind Hawai'i.
Cal Poly returns 22 women and 21 men while welcoming 7 women and 9 men as newcomers, respectively.
There were a number of highlights from the 2023-24 season that Cal Poly will look to build on this season. Topping the list, Drew Huston became an MPSF Champion in the men's 200-yard backstroke. He is the first Mustang to win an MPSF title in the event and the first Cal Poly swimmer since 2022 to secure an individual conference title.
Huston also broke school records in the 100 and 200 back. Likewise, Huston, Luke Reyes, Finn Schlamp and Jonathan Butler helped Cal Poly shatter the school record in the men's 400-yard medley relay at MPSF Championships. Huston later competed in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke.
Alex Seybold broke the men's school record in the 200-yard breaststroke at the Pac-12 Last Chance Invite, shattering the 2014 school record.
Justin Dolezal recorded a top-five mark in program history in all three dives — the men's platform, 1-meter and 3-meter dives. At the MPSF Championships, Dolezai took third in the 1-meter, fifth in the platform and eighth in the 3-meter. His third place finish in the 1-meter dive was the highest individual finish by a Cal Poly men's diver at the meet since the program joined the MPSF in 2014-15.
Madden Saini secured the second highest individual finish in school history by a Cal Poly men's diver at the MPSF Championships by capturing fourth in the men's 3-meter dive.
In total in Cal Poly's final season competing in the MPSF Championship meet, 65 personal bests were swam in the pool, 15 top-5 marks in program history were recorded between swimming and diving and four school records were broken. Cal Poly's men placed fourth as a team at the MPSF Championships — tied for their highest finish at the MPSF meet in program history, while the women placed sixth as a team at MPSF Championships, their best finish since taking fifth in 2021.
For the first time since 2009-10, the Big West is sponsoring men's and women's swimming and diving. Despite a conference change, many of the Mustangs' opponents from the MPSF will remain foes in the Big West as meets with UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Bakersfield, and UC Davis will persist.
