Mustangs Suffer Setback at No. 6 UC Davis

The Mustangs (2-4, 1-2 Big Sky) accumulated 381 yards of total offense. Quarterback Bo Kelly threw for 135 yards while fellow quarterback Richie Watts threw for 134 yards. Junior receiver Michael Briscoe had his first 100 yard receiving game, leading the team with 103 on four catches.
UC Davis (6-1, 3-0 Big Sky) had 671 yards of total offense. Aggie starting quarterback Myles Hastings threw for 458 yards and four touchdowns.
After the Mustangs punted on their opening drive to start UC Davis' first drive at their own six-yard line, the Aggies picked up a 73 yard gain on a passing play on their second play of the drive. Two plays later, they completed a 14-yard pass in the end zone to score and go up 7-0.
Cal Poly got on the board on its second drive of the game. A big 42-yard connection from Bo Kelly to Giancarlo Woods set up the Mustangs at the UC Davis 28. That lead to kicker Noah Serna making a 40-yard field goal to make it 7-3 halfway through the first quarter.
UC Davis then went 65 yards in 10 plays on its next drive, capped off by a two-yard rush by running back Lan Larrison, to go ahead 14-3. On Cal Poly's second play of their next drive, Kelly's pass was intercepted by the Aggies' Rex Connors and returned 35 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-3. Another big pass play by the Aggies at the end of the first quarter pushed the Aggie lead up to 28-3.
The Aggies opened the second quarter with a five minute, 85-yard drive that ended in a touchdown. It was finished off with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Hastings to Larrison.
The Mustangs scored their first touchdown of the game midway through the second quarter after putting together a three-play, 85-yard drive that took just 90 seconds. Two big passes, one of 52 yards and another of 31 yards, both from Richie Watts to Michael Briscoe, put the Mustangs down at the two-yard line. Watts then ran it in himself for the score to make it 35-10.
UC Davis scored on its opening drive of the second half, going 75 yards to make it 49-10. They then scored in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter to make it 56-10.
Cal Poly will stay on the road next week when traveling to face No. 8 Idaho Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. in Moscow.
