Strong Defense Leads Mustangs Past Tritons Saturday, 49-39

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Cal Poly women's basketball's defense showed up big on the road Saturday afternoon against UC San Diego, limiting the Tritons (7-9, 3-2 BW) to 28 percent shooting as the Mustangs earned a 49-39 win.
Junior guard Sydney Bourland paced the Mustangs (8-8, 4-2 BW) offensively with 15 points to go along with four rebounds. Fellow junior guard Sidney Richards added nine points and three assists to propel Cal Poly's conference record up to 4-2 and in a tie currently for third in the Big West standings.
The Tritons' 39 points are the fewest the Mustangs have allowed to an opponent this season. Their 28 percent shooting is the second-lowest percentage Cal Poly has limited a team to this season.
The Mustangs' stifling defense was there right from the tip as they held UC San Diego to just six points and 15 percent shooting in the first quarter. The Mustangs finished the first quarter on a 9-0 run the last four minutes and took a 14-6 lead into the second.
Cal Poly led it 30-20 at halftime before UCSD went on 9-3 run over the first six minutes of the third quarter to draw within four, 33-29.
The Tritons tied it up at 37 with six minutes left in the fourth after scoring the first four points of the quarter. However, the Mustangs responded with a 12-2 run the remainder of the game to clinch the victory.
Cal Poly will enjoy a week off before hosting Cal State Bakersfield next Saturday, Jan. 20, inside Mott Athletics Center at 2 p.m.
