Mustangs Come Up Short to UC Davis Saturday, 31-13
9/30/2023 9:40:00 PM | Football
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Redshirt freshman quarterback Bo Kelly threw for 191 yards in his first collegiate start for Cal Poly Saturday evening, but three first-half touchdowns from UC Davis helped the nationally-ranked Aggies retain the Golden Horseshoe with a 31-13 rivalry victory at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
Junior wide receiver Evan Burkhart (above) and redshirt freshman running back Troy Fletcher each enjoyed touchdowns for Cal Poly (2-3, 0-2), which began Saturday's matchup by forcing a UC Davis fumble on the opening kickoff. The Aggies (3-2, 1-1), however, turned the Mustangs over on downs and completed their initial 83-yard drive with wide receiver Trent Tompkins scoring on a five-yard rush.
UC Davis then added a 38-yard field goal from Hunter Ridley to go up 10-0 midway through the quarter.
Aggies receiver C.J. Hutton supplied a two-yard rushing touchdown to open the second quarter and Tompkins returned nine minutes from halftime with a one-yard rushing score to hand UC Davis a 24-0 lead.
Cal Poly broke onto the scoreboard 57 seconds before halftime as Kelly completed a 64-yard drive with a 15-yard effort to Burkhart.
The Mustangs, however, were unable to capitalize on either of their opening two drives of the second half as UC Davis increased the advantage to 31-7 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter after quarterback Miles Hastings found tight end Josh Gale from 11 yards.
Cal Poly completed the scoring with six minutes remaining as Fletcher rushed from two yards.
Junior wide receiver Giancarlo Woods led Cal Poly with seven receptions and 64 receiving yards. Defensively, junior linebacker David Meyer and freshman cornerback Delano Franklin paced Cal Poly with eight tackles apiece.
Cal Poly resumes action when hosting No. 4/6 Idaho on Saturday, Oct. 7. Kickoff on ESPN+ is 5:02 p.m.
