SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska recorded her fourth straight match of double-digit kills, but Cal Poly fell to a strong Pepperdine team Saturday 3-0 (25-16, 26-23, 25-17) in the finale of the Mustang Invitational.
Markovska finished with 12 kills as well as two blocks to lead the way for the Mustangs (6-6). Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken added nine kills.
The Waves (4-6) got off to a fast start to begin the first set, getting out to a 6-0 lead. The Mustangs were unable to recover from that as Pepperdine went on to win the set 25-16.
The second set was back-and-forth early before a 4-1 Cal Poly run put the Mustangs ahead 14-11. The Waves then tied it at 16 apiece after a 5- 2 run of their own. Tied at 20, Pepperdine scored two straight points to take a 22-20 advantage. Cal Poly came back to tie it at 23-23 before the Waves scored the next two points to win the set 25-23.
Pepperdine took a 5-1 lead to begin the third and later a 12-7 advantage before three straight points by the Mustangs got them back within two. The Waves then scored four unanswered points to go up by six before going on to win it 25-18.
Cal Poly finished the Mustang Invitational with a 1-2 record against some of the top teams on the west coast.
With non-conference play now finished, the Mustangs will now turn their attention to starting Big West play next week. They will start it on the road against Long Beach State Friday at 7 p.m. and UC San Diego Saturday at 7 p.m.
