Mustangs Fall in Tight Five-Set Match to Long Beach State in Big West Opener

LONG BEACH, Calif. – For already the fifth time this season, the Cal Poly volleyball team had a match go five sets, however this time coming up just short on the road against Long Beach State Friday night in the Big West opener 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 25-9, 26-28, 15-13).
It was a wild back-and-forth match that saw three of the five sets decided by three points or less. Redshirt junior Tommi Stockham led the Mustangs (6-7, 0-1 BW) offensively with 17 kills to go along with 11 digs to notch a double-double. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken had 11 kills while fellow redshirt sophomore Lizzy Markovska added nine.
Freshman setter Samantha Callahan recorded her first career double-double, dishing 13 assists and 12 digs. Fellow setter Emme Bullis also had a strong match, finishing with 27 assists and eight digs.
Trailing 10-8 in the first set, Cal Poly stormed ahead with five straight points to take a 13-10 lead. With the Mustangs ahead 16-13, Long Beach State (7-4, 1-0 BW) came back with a 4-0 run to go up 17-16. Tied at 20, Long Beach State went on a 5-1 run to finish the set and win it 25-21.
Despite trailing by four points in the second set, 15-11, Cal Poly rallied back with five straight points to tie it. Trailing 21-20, the Mustangs finished the set on a 5-1 run to take the set 25-22.
It was all Long Beach in the third set as the Beach hit .375 and held Cal Poly to a negative hitting percentage as they went on to win the set 25-9.
The fourth set was back-and-forth the whole way and took extra points to finish it. Tied at 24, the teams traded points until tied at 26, consecutive points via junior middle blocker Kate Slack won the set for Cal Poly 28-26.
The Mustangs got off to a strong start in the fifth set, getting out to a 6-1 lead. Long Beach State came back to eventually tie it at 7 after a 6-1 run of their own. Tied at 9, the Beach scored four in a row to take a 13-9 lead. The Mustangs got back in it with three straight points to make it 13-12. With Long Beach State leading 14-13, the Beach got a kill to finish off the match.
Cal Poly will head further south to face UC San Diego Saturday at 7 p.m. with the match airing live on ESPN+.
