Mustangs Fall to Huskies in Five-Set Thriller in Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Tommi Stockham and Lizzy Markovska each recorded double-doubles and middle blocker Kate Slack set her career-high in kills, but Cal Poly came just a few points short of upsetting Washington in the home opener Thursday, falling in five sets to the Huskies 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11) in the first match of the Mustang Invitational at Mott Athletics Center.
Markovska had a team-high 15 kills to go along with 16 digs. Slack finished the night with a career-high 13 kills, hitting a whopping .500, while also adding six digs and two blocks. Stockham had a career-high 20 digs as well as 11 kills. Redshirt junior outside hitter Amy Hiatt also had double digit kills, finishing with 10 as well as three blocks.
Defensively, junior libero Jolei Akima continued her stellar start to the season, matching her career-high with 25 digs. The reigning Big West Player of the Week notched her seventh match of at least 20 digs through the first 10 matches for the Mustangs (5-5).
Cal Poly got off to a fast start against Washington, who was just outside the top 25 in the latest AVCA Top 25 Poll, scoring the first four points of the first set and later getting out to a 10-point lead at 17-7. Washington was able to eventually get the Cal Poly lead down to two at 24-22 before an Annabelle Thalken kill gave the Mustangs the first set victory 25-22.
The Mustangs got out to a good start again in the second, taking a 6-3 lead early. Tied at 15 apiece, the Huskies rattled off an 8-2 run to pull away 23-17 and went on to win the set 25-19.
With Cal Poly ahead 12-10 in the third, the Mustangs extended the lead to five at 17-12. Washington then scored five straight to tie it at 17-17. Tied at 20, a 3-1 run by the Huskies put them up 23-21. Cal Poly scored the next point before Washington put two straight on the board to win the set 25-22.
Cal Poly rallied in the fourth as tied the Mustangs battled back from down 18-15 to turn the table and finish the set on a 10-2 run to come back and win the set 25-20 and force a decisive fifth set.
It was a good start for Cal Poly in the fifth set race to 15 as they got out to a 4-1 lead. With the Mustangs leading 10-7, a 4-1 Washington run tied it at 11 apiece. From there, the Huskies went on to score the next four points and win it 15-11.
Cal Poly will look to bounce back Friday when hosting Saint Mary's at 6 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
